Fossil free fertilisers are mineral fertilisers rooted in nitrates, possessing identical chemical and physical compositions as their conventional counterparts produced from fossil energy sources. The distinguishing factor of fossil-free fertilisers lies in their significantly reduced carbon footprint, attributed to their production process using renewable electricity sources, for example renewable-based hydrogen in the case of Power2Earth.
As of today, Sweden is one of the few European countries relying heavily on high carbon ammonia and fertiliser imports. Through Power2Earth’s domestic production of fossil free fertilisers and ammonia, Sweden is set to decarbonise its agricultural sector while also strengthening its self-sufficiency and domestic food supply chain.
In the production of all mineral fertilisers, ammonia serves as the fundamental production component. Currently, ammonia production relies on hydrogen derived from fossil fuels. In the context of producing fossil-free mineral fertilisers, the necessary hydrogen for ammonia synthesis will be sourced from water through electrolysis, which is a process driven by renewable electricity as opposed to fossil energy sources.
Power2Earth aims to have a substantial impact, with an estimated annual production capacity of 1,000,000 tons of fossil-free mineral fertilisers. This scale positions Power2Earth as a key player in promoting sustainable agricultural practices and reducing the environmental impact of using traditional fertiliser production in Sweden’s agricultural sector.
The choice to establish our mineral fertiliser plant in Luleå stems from the region's strategic advantages, specifically the region’s access to green electricity which is a pivotal element in Power2Earth’s mission to create a cutting-edge fossil-free mineral fertiliser facility. Additionally, Luleå has a large pool of skilled employees and a favorable business environment, highlighting the significance of local expertise in strengthening the regional economy and ensuring the success of our venture.
