Power2Earth in talks about the project, status and way forward

Ulrika Hagman, Senior Project Manager at Power2Earth, shares insights into the groundbreaking initiative aimed at establishing Sweden’s first fossil-free ammonia and fertilizer factory in Luleå. This ambitious collaboration brings together three key players, each contributing their unique expertise: Fertiberia’s leadership in the European fertilizer industry, Lantmännen’s agricultural acumen, and Nordion Energi’s cutting-edge hydrogen infrastructure capabilities.

Mineral fertilizers are essential for advancing climate-smart agriculture, making them a cornerstone of the green transition. Yet, as Hagman points out,Sweden currently lacks a domestic producer of mineral fertilizer—a gap with significant environmental and food security implications.

“Mineral fertilizer is a vital component of sustainable agriculture, but without a Swedish producer, we face challenges in environmental impact and food preparedness,” she explains.

A partnership rooted in expertise

Power2Earth leverages the complementary strengths of its partners to build a comprehensive value chain. Hagman elaborates:

“Fertiberia, with over 50 years of experience, is one of Europe’s largest and most trusted producers of mineral fertilizers. To achieve a green value chain, however, fossil-free fertilizer production must integrate with hydrogen infrastructure, where Nordion Energi stands as a market leader. Lantmännen contributes invaluable agricultural expertise, a robust organization, and a legacy of sustainable food production.”

She emphasizes the synergy between the partners:
“Individually, these companies are market leaders in their respective industries. Together, they form a powerhouse—a dream team, if you will—capable of driving real change.”

An ambitious investment and real challenges

The scale of Power2Earth’s vision is reflected in its projected investment of 20 billion SEK. However, like other large-scale, energy-intensive initiatives, the project faces significant challenges, particularly in securing the necessary infrastructure.

“The power connection is our biggest challenge right now,” Hagman admits. “Without a clear timeline from suppliers, we’ve had to adjust our project plans. However, we’re in continuous dialogue with key stakeholders and remain optimistic about finding constructive solutions.”

A bright future for Sweden and beyond

Despite these challenges, Power2Earth’s mission represents a transformative opportunity for Sweden and the broader Nordic region. By fostering a domestic, fossil-free supply of fertilizers, the project not only supports the agricultural sector but also positions Sweden as a leader in sustainable industrial innovation.

As the global demand for green solutions grows, Power2Earth’s efforts could serve as a model for collaboration and innovation in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

The Founding Companies Behind Power2Earth

Power2Earth is formed by a joint venture between Fertiberia, Nordion Energi and the Swedish agricultural cooperative Lantmännen. Together, the joint partnership leverages Fertiberia’s vast expertise in green fertiliser and ammonia production and Nordion Energi’s knowledge in hydrogen infrastructure construction. The collaboration also harnesses Lantmännen’s leading role as an agricultural cooperative in Northern Europe committed to increase crop yields while at the same time reduce impact on climate and environment.
